The European Parliament has elected the EPP Group candidate, José Manuel Durão Barroso, as President of the European Commission for the next five years. The EP has also put forward a comprehensive list of measures to counteract the present crisis in the milk sector. The EPP Group has called for binding agreements as a result of the forthcoming G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, USA. And plenary has adopted a Resolution tabled by the EPP Group on the external aspects of energy security.

President of the European Commission: EP follows citizens' will and votes for Barroso

Milk Crisis: European Parliament supports dairy farmers

In its first session of the new legislative period, the European Parliament has put forward a comprehensive list of measures to counteract the present crisis in the milk sector. Albert Dess (D), EPP Group Spokesman on agricultural affairs, welcomed the outcome of the vote on a respective Joint Resolution: "In this Resolution, we have demanded extensive measures which will help milk farmers in their currently difficult situation."

G20 Summit: EPP calls for binding agreements in Pittsburgh

The EPP Group in the European Parliament wants binding agreements as a result of the forthcoming G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, USA. At the same time, the EU must take the lead in finding creative solutions, as it does in the field of combating the negative effects of climate change.

Energy security to combine political and economic aspects

The Strasbourg plenary has adopted a Resolution tabled by the EPP Group on the external aspects of energy security. Elmar Brok (D), EPP Group Coordinator in the Foreign Affairs Committee, welcomed the large majority in favour of the Resolution: "It is important that we find a common European approach to energy security, even though energy supply is to remain under national competence.

Forest Fires: EP calls for more direct assistance for those affected

The European Parliament has expressed its strong solidarity with those affected by this summer's forest fires by adopting a Resolution. Southern Europe has been heavily affected by wild fires, which have scorched over 400,000 hectares per year over the last decade, causing severe problems to all the countries of the region.

President Buzek outlines his priorities

"My election is a symbol of the dreams of our part of Europe, a dream for the unity of our continent", said EP President Jerzy Buzek in his long-awaited inaugural speech in the Plenary. Presenting his priorities for the next two and a half years, Mr Buzek emphasised that he will work for an inclusive, modern and strong Europe.

Baltic Sea Strategy essential for economic development

Since the EU enlargement of 2004, challenges facing the Baltic Sea region have increased. "The Baltic Sea Strategy reflects a fundamental change which took place in this region five years ago and this is the reason the EU needs a comprehensive approach to react in a coordinated way to both the opportunities and challenges this new situation presents", says EPP Group Member Tunne Kelam (ET).
